When Is a Dental Filling Necessary?

Cavity Prevention

Brushing, flossing, and regular dental cleanings are necessary to prevent cavities. Additionally, you should be mindful of consuming sugary beverages and snacks, and the effect that they have on your teeth and gums. Excess sugar can feed bad bacteria that remain in your mouth after brushing, flossing, and rinsing. Highly acidic foods, such as orange juice, can break down the protective enamel on your teeth, giving bad bacteria a place to feed on excess sugar.

Certain mouths are prone to cavities regardless of dental hygiene habits and diets. For example, a mouth with crowded teeth often has points of friction between the teeth that lead to incipient dental caries, or signs of potential cavities.
